YAMAHA TRBX174 4 String Electric Bass Basses Bundle Student Beginner Series (TRBX 174)
The Yamaha TRBX174 bass guitar is an outstanding value for the modern bassist. The TRBX series is one of Yamaha's most popular basses, and for good reason. This cool-looking, great-sounding bass gives you a comfortable Yamaha body shape and a fast-action bolt-on maple neck with a smooth-playing sonokeling fingerboard. You get strong, punchy tone from the P/J arrangement of split-coil/single-coil pickups. Factor in the solid hardware and a range of great finishes, and you've got an eye-catching and ear-catching bass with the Yamaha TRBX174.
Body & Neck : The body of the Yamaha TRBX174 is the same one you can find on the rest of the TRBX line. The design itself is pretty well balanced and comfortable to use. Tonewood of choice for this model is Alder, which would be the same type of wood that Fender uses for most of their guitars. In a way, this also plays a role in the sound of TRBX 174. The neck is a standard maple unit with a rosewood fretboard that we are used to seeing in this segment of the market. Overall, Yamaha TRBX174 looks pretty good all things considered, especially if you go for the Old Violin Sunburst finish.
Hardware : In terms of hardware, the situation is more or less as one would expect. We got that flush vintage style bridge that comes with four fully adjustable saddles, and a set of die-cast tuners on the headstock. For the most part, the whole setup works flawlessly. The tuners are decent enough and hold the tuning just fine under normal circumstances, although when you are dealing with bass guitars in this price range, tuners are something that you should consider upgrading somewhere in the future. As it is, the hardware is good enough for just about anything you could think of.
Electronics : Yamaha TRBX174 is another model that brings the J bass setup with that extra single coil in the bridge position. The pickups on this particular bass have a good amount of definition and range. They are controlled by your standard controls, which include Tone knob, and two Volume knobs for each pickup. The pots themselves are pretty decent, offering good tracking and enough feedback for quick adjustments.
Sound : The sound is by far the best thing about this Yamaha. Those pickups offer a great range of sharp, punchy mids with crisp trebles when you need that thump. On the other hand, roll that tone knob in the other direction and you get a very smooth and fat tone perfect for driving rhythms. You won’t have trouble playing any genre of music with TRBX174. It just fits in everywhere.
Conclusion : Yamaha has proven once again why their basses are held in such a high regard. Bang for the buck, this TRBX174 beats a good majority of the models in its price range. On top of that, it an awesome looking axe. All things considered, you can’t go wrong with this particular bass guitar.
