New Release

Roland FP-40: The New Standard in Portable Digital Pianos Arrives at LBS Music World

Posted by LBS Music World  ·  Digital Pianos, Roland

Roland has just unveiled the FP-40, the long-awaited successor to the best-selling FP-30/FP-30X line. It brings the Piano Reality sound engine from Roland's flagship grand pianos, the brand's first-ever built-in Wi-Fi, and a free guided-learning app into one slim, gig-ready instrument. Here's what's new, and how it stacks up against the FP-30X.

Roland FP-40 88-Key Digital Piano at LBS Music World

The Roland FP-40, now available at LBS Music World showrooms and online.

A flagship sound engine in a portable body

The headline upgrade is under the hood. Where the FP-30X ran Roland's well-loved SuperNATURAL engine, the FP-40 steps up to the new Piano Reality sound engine, the same technology derived from Roland's top-of-the-line GP-series grand pianos. It blends detailed sampling with physical modelling to capture the depth, resonance, and natural decay of a real acoustic instrument, giving you richer tone and smoother velocity transitions right out of the box.

Underneath, the trusted 88-key PHA-4 Standard keyboard carries over, with weighted hammer action, escapement, Ivory Feel key surfaces, and triple-sensor detection. If you already love the feel of the FP-30X, you'll be right at home, only now with a more expressive engine driving it.

See and hear the FP-40 in action.

The big new features

  • Built-in Wi-Fi — a Roland first. The FP-40 is the first Roland piano with onboard Wi-Fi, enabling wireless software updates, playing-history tracking, and direct access to the Piano Sphere app without tethering to a cable.
  • Piano Sphere app, powered by Skoove. Developed with Skoove (a method trusted by over three million players), the free app delivers guided lessons, real-time feedback, and a library of popular songs and courses to keep practice engaging.
  • 256-voice polyphony. Plenty of headroom for dense, pedal-heavy classical passages without dropped notes.
  • Bluetooth 5.4 with Audio & MIDI. Stream backing tracks through the speakers and connect apps wirelessly.
  • USB-C connectivity for modern recording and mobile integration, and headset-mic support for online lessons and livestreams.
  • Redesigned speaker system with improved spatial imaging and depth, plus Piano Reality Headphones Ambience for natural late-night practice.

The takeaway: Roland isn't just refreshing the FP-30X, it's rethinking what a portable piano does at home. With Wi-Fi and Piano Sphere built in, the FP-40 is designed to keep growing with you long after purchase, rather than becoming a static piece of furniture.

Roland FP-40 vs FP-30X: side by side
